Fundamentals of a Stitch

According to ISO 4915, a stitch is the elementary basis of sewing consisting of one or more strands or loops of thread. It is formed by threads that are passed through the material according to special rules by hand or machine. A stitch can be formed without material, within the material, through, or on the material.

A sewing stitch is defined as ' one unit of conformation resulting from one or more strands or loops of thread intralooping, interloping or passing into or through the material.'
