Types of Packaging

The packaging can be subdivided into two main categories
  1. Shipping Packaging
  2. Merchandise Packaging

1.   Shipping Packaging

The Shipping packaging delivers BULK GOODS from factory to retail floor. It includes.
  1. Cartons
  2. Bags
  3. Boxes
  4. Crates

1.1   Cartons
Carton is a rigid one-piece container, made of paper to hold items. The conventional carton has at least three layers of paper, where a corrugated layer is placed in the middle. For stronger cartons, the number of layers may increase to give with two corrugated layers. The items are packed inside as folded, hung, or bundled together.

The dimensions of the cartons are also important for shipment. Its dimension will be designed in a way that it OPTIMALLY fits into the container so that maximum use of container volume can be realized and shipment costs are reduced.

In apparel production, loading is carried out with a plan which is handed over along with the shipping documents. The cartons have the necessary information for its content identification. This includes:
  • Order Number
  • Serial Number
  • Carton Number
  • Number of pieces
  • Color
  • Size
1.2   Hanger Box
It is designed in a way that the garment can be shipped in hanged form so that its creasing may not be disturbed during shipment. These cartons are marked with the direction of placment.

1.3   Crates
A crate is a sturdy container made of wood that holds cartons during shipping. Usually, conventional apparel products, they are not much used. However, in the case of special garments, their use is not an exception.

1.4   Packaging Tape
Packaging tapes are made of paper or plastic film with adhesive on one side. Tapes may or may not have threads running along their length to reinforce them. The carton is closed by these packaging tapes, ideally from all sides. Often, the customers have their own branded tapes for this purpose.

1.5   Strapping

Strapping is a band of polyester, nylon, plastic, or steel and wrapped around the carton manually or mechanically, sealed to provide strength and stability during shipping. It helps prevent the shipping box from opening up during shipment under load or material handling.

 

 


2.   Merchandising Packaging

Merchanding packaging is the packaging that is used to pack the end product for the end-user. This packaging supports the transportation of product from logistic center to sale floor. Individual products are prepared with price tags, barcodes, RFID stickers, packed in bags or hung un hangers, folded as per requirements of the customer.

2.1   Flat Bag

It is a flat bag mostly made of polyethylene, sealed at the bottom and on top, it is usually taped so that after putting the garment inside it can be secured. Most used poly bags in garments industries are PP (polypropylene) poly bags, PE (polyethylene) & LDPE (low-density polyethylene), HDPE (high-density polyethylene), etc. For a polybag, its thickness is important along with dimensions which is as per the requirement of the garment. There’re three different ways to measure poly bags thickness. These are:

  1. Mil (1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch)
  2. Microns (1 microns = 1/1000 of a mm)
  3. Gauge (1 gauge = 1/100000 of an inch)
Conversion, 1 mil = 25 microns = 100 gauge.

Guage is the widely used method to measure the thickness of polybag.

2.2   Jet Clip

Jet clips are used to hold the garment fold in place. they are usually used for shirts, blouses, and jeans. they can be transparent or white in color with or without teeth.

2.3   Pins

Pins are used to held in place multiple layers of folded garment in place. They vary in length, shape, diameter, and point type. Most commonly used pins are

  • Ball Point Pin

  • T Pin

2.4   Neckband Inserts

The primary function of the neckband insert is to keep the shape of the collar in place after folding and during shipment. It is inserted between the neckband and lower side of collar. The insert is made up of plastic or paperboard and has variable/adjustable length.

2.5   Hangers

Hangers can be used for all types of garments but they are specially used for blazers, coats, and pants. Hangers also come in various forms, shapes, and sizes as per the garment. They are also designed in which the garments can be used for multiple garments (e.g. Bodysuits for kids). They come in all plastic, wood, and metal. Often various materials are combined for hangers especially for hooks and clips the metal is a suitable material.

Coat hangers can be in plastic, wood, with a smooth contoured shoulder, with a chrome hook and a bar to hang the passing pant.

Top hangers are also known as shirt hanger or dress hanger are made up clear, white, black plastic or also in woooden with sloped shoulder. Some hangers have also notches so that the hanging garments with straps can be held in place.

Bottom/Pant Hangers

These hangers have pair of clips that is used to hold the bottom at waistband or at the folding point. The distance between clips is flexible and can be adjusted according to the requirement of the hanging garments.
